One year after launching the City of Beaufort Home Repair Program, the Beaufort-Jasper Housing Trust (BJHT) is seeing meaningful results for homeowners while demonstrating the impact of local investment in housing preservation. The program, funded through a partnership between the City of Beaufort and BJHT, began with $250,000 to address critical health, safety, and accessibility repairs for income-qualified homeowners.
The program received 20 eligible applications in 2025. Demand was strongest in the City’s Northwest Quadrant, where 90% of all applications originated, and 12 additional homeowners remain on the waiting list. Six homeowners completed third-party income and title verification and have moved into the repair pipeline.
The first phase of the program has already completed repairs on two homes, totaling nearly $70,000 in improvements. Projects have included new roofs, HVAC systems, electrical upgrades, accessibility improvements, and window and door replacements. Three additional homes are currently under construction or in the final stages of repair, with approximately $132,500 in work underway. Based on current estimates, funding should remain to assist at least one additional homeowner from the waiting list.
Beyond the numbers, the program is improving lives. One homeowner shared, “Our dining room lights that flickered are now solid and I can use the toaster and microwave at the same time! Best day ever! This has gone so smoothly. Thank you so much!” Another resident, who had relied on window air conditioning units for over a year while dealing with a leaking roof, now has a safe, weather-tight home with a new HVAC system.
As work continues, BJHT remains committed to preserving existing housing, helping residents remain safely in their homes, and demonstrating how strategic partnerships can address critical housing needs throughout the Lowcountry.
