Beaufort County Partners with BJHT

A significant new workforce housing initiative is taking shape in Beaufort. Beaufort County has transferred five parcels of publicly owned land to the Beaufort-Jasper Housing Trust (BJHT) for the development of workforce housing within the City of Beaufort. Located near Beaufort Memorial Hospital and the Technical College of the Lowcountry, the property offers an opportunity to create housing close to major employers, education, healthcare and other community resources.

The vision is to develop a workforce housing community with an initial emphasis on nurses and other healthcare employees, while also creating opportunities for first responders, teachers and other members of our local workforce.

The land itself is an important part of making the project possible. Land acquisition is often one of the largest costs associated with new housing development. By contributing publicly owned property, Beaufort County is helping reduce that barrier and giving BJHT an asset that can be leveraged alongside private investment and other funding sources — with long-term affordability at the center of the project.

Just as importantly, this is a collaborative effort. BJHT is working with Beaufort County, the City of Beaufort, Beaufort Memorial Hospital and other community partners to shape a project that responds to the area’s workforce housing needs.

There is still much work ahead, but the transfer represents something important: public land being put to work to address a critical community need.

As plans progress, BJHT will continue sharing updates on the development concept, partnerships, timeline and future housing opportunities.
